In September of that year a hurricane hit, and Long Island bore the brunt of its wrath, leaving only destruction in its wake. In this way, the history of Fire Island is also a history of queer joy and survival, whether in the face of natural disaster, devastating illness, or social and artistic progress.

It changed hands a few times and is now undergoing renovationsoon to be the site of another hotel, The Tryst Fire Island. After time abroadshe came back and learned the area was thriving. Unencumbered by the prying eyes of rampant homophobia, queer people were able to build communities and thrive on the island, namely its hamlets of The Pines and Cherry Grove. As the area returned to normal, however, island once occupied by families became available as they moved to other parts of Fire Island. Model John Whyte bought the hotel from Fears in and continued this tradition. This was something drag artist and transgender woman Teri Warren experienced when she tried to have dinner there in and was denied entry.

He later built many homes on Cherry Grove in addition to continually expanding the hotel.
