I attempted suicide 3 times in 2 years, one of which put me in a coma for 48 hours. We document and expose abuses based on sexual orientation and gender identity worldwide, including torture, killing and executions, arrests under unjust laws, unequal treatment, censorship, medical abuses, discrimination in health and jobs and housing, domestic violence, abuses against children, and denial of family rights and recognition.
I was the victim and became the perpetrator. I was met with online hostility, and I became the target of a smear campaign where I was outed as gay which led to my arrest in Saudi Arabia. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse.
They didn't give me food or water, so a lot of times I ate from the garbage. The first two weeks were the worst because no one came to my room [cell] from my embassy or a lawyer. I was beside myself, and that was when we first knew that we had a big gay.

I went to the police station to file a complaint because I was accosted in the street by a police officer with verbal harassment. McLean also appeared and performed with the Backstreet Boys on Arthur, Sesame Street, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Saturday Night Live.
I had to leave Tunisia. The case soon changed against me. I told him I will complain to the police, and he said go ahead. I was arrested in Saudi Arabia and sentenced to 10 months in prison and a USD fine, along with a decision to deport me back to Yemen where my life was in danger. "We did three or four songs, the crowd went nuts and I was standing next to this 6-foot-6 drag queen who gave me a hug and a kiss.
I still receive death threats online to this day. Social media platforms should proactively remove abusive content that violates platform standards on harassment, hate speech, and incitement to violence, which could put people at risk.
What happened in Januarysome of the [Tunisian] former parliamentarians published my photos and changed the public opinion against me, and also targeted many other activists through [social media] posts that incited violence and discrimination. I spent 3 or 4 months away from my house, in fear of online threats and the backstreet ones in the streets and where I lived.
I'd find thousands of comments, including swearing, demeaning language, and threats. Under the law against homosexuality [debauchery], I was sentenced not for being an escort, but just [based on] five photos on the internet. In Aprilhe made a guest appearance voicing himself in the Static Shock episode "Duped".
I stayed with them [the policemen for] like days. The Backstreet Boys, including McLean, made their film debut by appearing in the comedy This Is the End. At a historic Backstreet Boys concert — Nick Carter, AJ Gay, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, and Kevin Richardson — the crowd was already ecstatic when an unexpected surprise lit up the stage.
